João Rodrigues: Leading the Technical Team with Vision
As Director of Web, João oversees the development and performance of SBT’s digital platforms, ensuring they’re secure, scalable, and intuitive. “I’m the Director of Web at Security Blue Team, where I oversee the development and performance of all our web platforms,” he explains.
My role involves everything from building and maintaining systems to ensuring security, scalability, and a great user experience across the board.
Beyond his foundational work on the BTLO platform, João has made significant contributions to our website and other digital tools, creating a cohesive, reliable experience for clients and learners alike. “I bring over 12 years of hands-on experience building platforms used by thousands - sometimes millions - of users across industries like insurance, real estate, e-commerce, and online training,” he says. “I apply that knowledge daily to ensure our systems are smooth, secure, and reliable, offering prospective clients and learners the best possible first impression and long-term experience.”
João’s days are a whirlwind of activity. “Most days start with stand-up meetings with my team to get aligned and resolve any blockers,” he shares. After tackling emails and checking live platforms to ensure peak performance, he dives into problem-solving, developing new features, or supporting internal teams. “It’s a dynamic role - no two days are exactly alike,” he adds, his enthusiasm for the variety of his work shining through.
What drew João to Security Blue Team? His connection predates the company itself. “I actually joined the SBT community before it officially became a company,” he recalls. “Back then, I was eager to dive deeper into the defensive side of cybersecurity. I immediately connected with the mission and community, and I knew it was something special.” That passion fueled an incredible journey, from winning SBT’s first CTF, co-hosting the second, and playing a key role in building the BTLO platform and enhancing our website, ultimately becoming SBT’s first full-time employee. “It’s been an amazing journey,” he reflects.
The heart of João’s work lies in its impact. “What I find most rewarding is the tangible impact,” he says.
Knowing that the work we do helps educate and empower people to defend systems and protect real-world infrastructure is incredibly motivating.
He also loves tackling complex challenges and collaborating across departments to propel SBT forward, a true reflection of his leadership.
João’s journey began with a childhood love for coding. “My background is rooted in programming and web development. I started coding at a young age with Pascal, and by high school, I was already building full e-commerce platforms using vanilla PHP and JavaScript,” he shares. A Computer Engineering degree followed, along with diverse industry experience that honed his skills. “Over time, I also developed a strong interest in web security - both offensive and defensive - which remains a big part of what I do today,” he notes.
Looking ahead, João has big dreams. “For SBT, I want to see us continue to grow and make a global impact,” he says. “If our students can take what they’ve learned and use it to protect companies and critical infrastructure, then we’re doing meaningful work.” Personally, he’s focused on staying at the cutting edge of web technology and security, always striving to grow. Outside work, João keeps it simple: “I enjoy spending time with friends and gaming - it’s a great way to unwind and reset.”
As a kid, João was drawn to tech without a specific dream job in mind. “I never had a specific dream job as a kid, but I was always drawn to technology,” he recalls. “As I grew older, I explored different areas of IT and eventually discovered my passion for web development - and I’ve stuck with it ever since.”
